Major Cult Becomes Christian

Herbert W. Armstrong, who founded The Worldwide Church of God in the 1930’s, considered himself to be God’s end-time prophet. He taught that Christ’s gospel wasn’t preached after 50 AD and that he was God’s chosen instrument to restore true Christianity to the world. As a result of his heretical teachings his church was considered by orthodox Christianity to be a pseudo-Christian cult. But after Armstrong’s death in 1986, the Worldwide Church of God’s leadership began examining his teachings in light of the Bible. As a result, these teachings were determined to be heretical and were ultimately rejected. Biblical truth became the church’s doctrinal foundation. The Christian community hailed this as a courageous move. Although an enormous price was paid, both in membership and income, the remaining church members readily agreed that their new-found relationship with Jesus Christ was well worth it.

A DVD, “Called to be Free,” features the testimonies of leaders and lay people of the transformed Worldwide Church of God, telling this incredible story in their own words. Armstrong’s claims were strikingly similar to those of another self-proclaimed prophet, Mormon founder Joseph Smith, Jr. He also claimed to restore true Christianity to the world and introduced heretical teachings. It is our hope that those who consider themselves Christians, yet embrace the teachings of Joseph Smith, will follow the unprecedented example of the Worldwide Church of God. We pray that they will have the courage to examine objectively Joseph Smith’s teachings in the light of biblical Christianity. Granted, it will not be easy or without pain. The realization that Joseph Smith was a false prophet and that his scriptures and priesthood system are unbiblical may be met with resistance, perhaps even hostility. But deeply-held beliefs which minimize Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross for our sins can only serve to separate such a believer from God, not bring him into a relationship with Him. Called to be Free celebrates the personal relationship with Jesus Christ that Worldwide Church of God members discovered when they transferred their loyalty and devotion from Armstrong’s man-made religion to biblical Christianity. Their testimonies will bring deep encouragement to Christians and hope to those in bondage to other pseudo-Christian cults.
