Same-sex marriage in the church

Our LifeLine street ministry team passed out the following tract during the special three-day conference in April, 2013:

  The Truth Matters

Dear Community of Christ member,

Do you realize that by ignoring the scriptural warnings condemning homosexuality, that you are rejecting the very means which God provided to protect people from the consequences of diseases such as AIDS?

According to estimates by WHO (World Health Organization) and UNAIDS, 34 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2011. That same year, some 2.5 million people became newly infected, and 1.7 million died of AIDS-related causes, including 230 000 children. http://www.who.int/gho/hiv/en/

In the U.S. in 2010 (the most recent year that data are available), CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), reports that there were an estimated 47,500 new HIV infections. Nearly two thirds of these new infections occurred in gay and bisexual men. http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/print/basic.htm

Christian author Hank Hanegraaff makes this insightful observation regarding the Bible’s stand on homosexuality:

Far from being irrelevant and antiquated, the Bible’s warnings regarding homosexuality are eerily relevant and up to date. The Book of Romans aptly describes both the perversion and the penalty: ‘Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions’ (Romans 1:17). It would be difficult to miss the relationship between Paul’s words and the current healthcare holocaust. More people already have died worldwide from AIDS than the United States of America has lost in all its wars combined. This is but the tip of an insidious iceberg. Thus, far from demonstrating that the Bible is out of step with the times, its warnings regarding homosexuality demonstrate that it is as relevant today as it was in the beginning” (Hank Hanegraaff, The Bible Answer Book pp. 124-125).

Disregarding scriptural warnings about homosexual behavior, and redefining the word marriage to suit their purposes, the COC continues its quest to portray homosexuality as normal. Rejecting the Bible as the standard of truth for evaluating social issues, the COC instead appeals to tolerance, open-mindedness, and  “unbiased” opinion. Nevertheless, God’s Word could not speak more clearly:

Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God” (I Cor. 6:9-10).

The truth is that God loves all people, including homosexuals. The truth is that we are all guilty of sin, “All have
sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But, thankfully, God in His love and mercy sent
Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins. The truth is that every person who is willing to repent of his/her sins and
accept God’s offer of forgiveness, also receives the gift of the Holy Spirit who guides and empowers
yielded hearts to live the Christian life.

Our prayer for members of the COC is threefold: that they will realize that the doctrines in their scriptures (inherited from Joseph Smith), actually contradict the Word of God as found in the Bible; that their leaders, knowingly or not, have re-defined God’s Word in order to affirm their own agendas for the church; and that God does not honor the efforts of those who try to do His work their way instead of His.

God has spoken clearly in His Word on the subject of homosexuality. It is our sincere hope that COC members will vote according to His will.  The Truth really does matter…..He can change your life forever.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”   (John 14:6)

NOTE: At the final meeting of the special conference, the delegates voted overwhelmingly to approve same-sex marriage in the church and admit homosexuals into the priesthood.

Our prayers at LifeLine Ministries are that Community of Christ members who disapprove of the gay life-style will seek out a church where the Biblical gospel is clearly taught and God’s moral standards are upheld.

Thanks so much.
